Takoradi joins the global celebration of Wikidata at 13

A community meetup brought experienced volunteers and first-time contributors together around structured open data.

Fante Wikimedians Community activity

The Fante Wikimedians Community joined the global Wikidata at 13 celebration with a learning activity in Takoradi. The event connected a worldwide Wikimedia milestone with practical local training on structured data and its role in making knowledge easier for people and machines to discover.

Wikidata is a multilingual knowledge base that supports Wikipedia and many other digital tools. Instead of storing information only as prose, it connects items through structured statements such as dates, locations, occupations and relationships. This structure allows the same information to be reused across languages and projects.

Why this matters

For participants working in Fante and other Ghanaian-language contexts, Wikidata offers an important opportunity. A person, place or cultural practice can be represented once as a shared item and then connected to labels and descriptions in multiple languages. Adding accurate Fante labels helps readers encounter familiar concepts in their own language across Wikimedia interfaces.

The anniversary session introduced participants to creating and improving items, adding references, understanding properties and avoiding duplication. It also encouraged discussion about which Ghanaian people, institutions, cultural practices and places remain underrepresented in structured data.

Looking ahead

Celebrations like this are most valuable when they lead to continued practice. Participants were encouraged to apply their skills after the event, improve existing records and connect Wikidata work with Wikipedia articles and Wikimedia Commons media.

By joining Wikidata’s global birthday, the community demonstrated that technical knowledge projects can be locally meaningful. Structured data is not separate from language and culture; when developed carefully, it can help Fante knowledge become more visible, connected and reusable across the internet.
