Two national honours for Fante-language knowledge

The recognition was announced by the Wikimedia Ghana User Group as part of the Ghanaian Wikimedia Community Awards 2025. Fante Wikipedia was named Ghanaian Language Wikipedia of the Year 2025, while the Fante Wikimedians Community received Ghanaian Community of the Year 2025. The awards were formally presented on 13 February 2026.

The language-project honour celebrates steady progress on Fante Wikipedia and the work required to make an indigenous-language encyclopedia useful, reliable and welcoming. Every new article, improved reference, translated interface message and mentoring session helps readers find more knowledge in a language used in homes, schools, media and communities across Ghana.

Why this matters

The community award recognises the collective structure behind that progress. Volunteers have organised training sessions, edit-a-thons, outreach activities, contests, office hours and partnerships. These programmes have helped new contributors learn how Wikimedia works while giving experienced editors opportunities to mentor others and coordinate projects.

Receiving both honours in the same awards cycle is especially meaningful because it connects content growth with community health. A language edition cannot develop through article numbers alone; it needs people who feel supported, trusted and able to take responsibility. The awards therefore belong to the editors, trainers, organisers, partners and participants who have contributed time and knowledge.

Looking ahead

The honours also strengthen the community’s responsibility to keep improving. Future work will focus on article quality, stronger sourcing, volunteer retention, cultural documentation and partnerships that connect Fante-language knowledge with schools, institutions and local knowledge holders.

For the Fante Wikimedians Community, the awards are not an endpoint. They are encouragement to continue building a sustainable home for Fante knowledge online and to ensure that more people can both access and contribute to free knowledge in their own language.
