Fante Wikipedia marks its first anniversary

Fante Wikipedia’s first anniversary offered the community an opportunity to celebrate progress while looking honestly at the work still ahead. One year after the dedicated domain went live, volunteers could point to a growing body of articles, a wider network of contributors and stronger public awareness of Fante-language Wikimedia work.

Anniversaries are useful moments for a young language project because they make progress visible. Article creation is important, but so are less visible achievements: correcting spelling, improving references, translating interface messages, welcoming new editors, resolving content questions and keeping community programmes active.

Why this matters

The first year showed the value of combining online contribution with in-person support. Training sessions and edit-a-thons helped participants practise account creation, source evaluation, article structure, Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons. Mentorship and office hours gave newcomers a place to ask questions after formal events ended.

The anniversary also highlighted the importance of quality. A sustainable encyclopedia must provide information that readers can trust, so the community continues to encourage citations, neutral writing, clear language and attention to topics that matter to Fante-speaking communities.

Looking ahead

Another priority is contributor retention. New editors are more likely to remain active when they receive patient guidance, meaningful tasks and recognition for their effort. The community’s volunteer-led approach aims to create those conditions while gradually developing more trainers and organisers.

As Fante Wikipedia enters its next chapter, the focus is not only on becoming larger but on becoming more useful, inclusive and resilient. The anniversary celebrates what volunteers achieved together and renews the invitation for more Fante speakers and knowledge holders to participate.
